ECA 2023 Convention

Interpersonal Communication Interest Group Call for Submissions

“Harboring Innovation” Baltimore, MD

March 29 to April 2, 2023

The Interpersonal Communication Interest Group invites paper and panel submissions for ECA's 114th Annual Convention. The 2023 convention theme is “Harboring Innovation”, and we look forward to an in-person convention that offers us the opportunity to reflect on this theme and focus on innovations in our teaching and scholarship as well as innovating the discipline. In her call for papers, Jennifer Waldeck (First Vice President) asks “interest groups and members to develop programming for the convention that focuses on how we have innovated and how we need to innovate to remain relevant, cutting-edge, and unique.”

Paper and panel/program submissions must be received by 11:59pm (PST) on October 16, 2022.

ECA utilizes Attendee Interactive to manage submissions and reviews. An email will be sent to all ECA members with a link to the submission site in the coming weeks (NOTE: This link is also available on the ECA website – www.ecacomm.org). To submit your work, you will be prompted to login using ECA-specific credentials or prompted to create a new account (NOTE: Your login credentials are unique to ECA – you may not use credentials you may have created for other associations, such as NCA, that uses Attendee Interactive).

The Interpersonal Communication Interest Group invites two types of submissions:

Completed Papers – Submission Guidelines:

Completed papers that report original research, provide an extensive literature review, or showcase some other form of scholarship are encouraged. Papers should be no more than 25 double-spaced pages (excluding title page, abstract, references, and appendices) and submitted in PDF format. Please comply with the APA 7th edition guidelines.

Paper submissions must include the following elements:

1.  Include a title and an abstract. The abstract should appear on the second page of the document.

2.  Indicate “Student Paper” if the work is authored solely by graduate or undergraduate students.

3.  Indicate “Debut” if a paper is written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention.

4.  At the bottom of the cover page, please include the following statement of professional responsibility:

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.

5.  Remove any identifying information (author name, university affiliation) in the document that is uploaded to Attendee Interactive.

6.  Save and submit in PDF format through Attendee Interactive.

**If the paper has multiple authors, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.

Panel/Program Proposals – Submission Guidelines:

In addition to traditional panel submissions in which three to four speakers present individual papers on a specific topic area, consider submitting panels that are unique in composition and format. For instance, you might consider proposing a workshop session led by two or three experts on a particular topic with audience involvement and participation. You might also consider submitting a round table discussion featuring 5-8 presenters who share their positions on a focused topic moderated by a chair.

Submissions of panel/program proposals must include the following elements saved in a PDF file:

1.  A thematic title for the program.

2.  Contact information for a chair and a respondent (if applicable). Chairs should not also be designated as respondents.

3.  Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.

4.  A program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.

5.  A detailed rationale for the program/panel.

6.  Titles and abstracts for each speaker’s contribution (if applicable).

7.  A statement of professional responsibility:

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.

**Submitters are encouraged to create panels/programs comprised of individuals from different institutions. Chairs and respondents should typically not also serve as panelists.

Additional Guidelines:

Presenters are encouraged to present without technology. Please note that a paper or panel should be submitted to only one (1) interest group for consideration.

Submissions must be saved as PDF files.

Please contact Erin Brummett at ebrummet@bloomu.edu if you have questions about the submission process. For additional information about the convention, including short courses and other programming, please see the ECA website available at www.ecasite.org.

Convention acceptance notifications will be sent in January 2023.
