NCA Preconference November 19th: Elevating the Work and Memory of Calvin O. Schrag

NCA PRECONFERNCE: Elevating the Work and Memory of Calvin O. Schrag

Wed Nov 19th 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Room Red Rock 08

Abstract:

Dr. Calvin O. Schrag is a foundational and luminary figure in both philosophy and communication.  To some degree he is responsible for bringing Continental philosophy to the United States.  He studied with the likes of Gadamer and Tillich.  He authored more than ten books and hundreds of articles.  He was in the frontlines for conversations about structuralism, postmodernity, critical theory, existentialism, and phenomenology.

He also had a distinguished career as a beloved teacher for decades at Purdue University.  While at Purdue he developed the interdisciplinary dual PhD program in Philosophy & Communication.  He taught generations of communication scholars and wrote the book Communicative Praxis and the Space of Subjectivity which still is a foundational text in philosophy of communication and communication ethics.  Ideas such as transversals and communicative praxis have provided a foundation for many a communication scholar.

At this NCA preconference former students will share papers, and presentations about our beloved teacher.  These will be published in a special issue of Analecta Hemeneutica. We will also have a discussion of Dr Schrag’s book – Self After Postmodernity and his QJS article “Rhetoric Resituated at the End of Philosophy.”  This pre-conference is for anyone whether you are new to his work or have engaged him over the past decades.  Schrag was one of the kindest and most generous thinkers you could meet.
